Giddy Up.

Christy!

You hold a treasure inside of you. It’s a joy that we can’t understand, a connection maybe someone else who rides horses might recognize. For you, it’s driven you to be beautiful, to pursue all you can be on and off your horses. Thank you for showing me that, for showing me the beautiful Gavin and Brandy. I hope these images due even an ounce of justice to all you have accomplished so far.

Aloha,

Ajja

Enjoy these green eyes friends.

And this sweet smile.

Cause she will bid Maui farewell next year.

No worries though this ocean will always be her pathway back.

Meet Gavin. He is a charmer, plus he poses real good.

See his cool pose here. Didn’t even have to tell him to do that leg thing.

And this is pretty Brandy, miss faithful.

Her favorite…

October 13, 2011

Jessica,

You are perfectly passionate and driven. Mixed with another perfect mix of fun and goofy. It’s clear you are enjoying your last year at Seabury  but have your mind set on the world!

There is nothing in your way that will stay in your way, I am in awe of your ability to put in the kind of hard work it takes to accomplishes dream like yours. Which you never finished telling me about, how about you tell me between plie’s and tendu’s next Tuesday!

Aloha,

Ajja

Her favorite ballet is the Nutcracker. Which says to me she will certainly enjoy what will become a long and healthy career as a ballerina. She also has a keen ear for the music of every famous ballet and has great dreams of the parts she will play in each of them. Maui will only say we knew her when…..

Big Apple

September 30, 2011

Dear dear Rachel,

You are leaving today for NEW YORK CITY!! Can you believe it?! You are living a dancers dream.  Live it up, be bold and confident, never fear yourself, any choreographer or any other dancer. You are the only Rachel Berman….ha ha ha! Dance with that huge heart of yours and nothing will stop you.

I am so happy to have crossed paths with you on your little hiatus home before the big apple. I hope that these pictures/awesome head shots communicate just how sweet and open you really are. NYC needs that, don’t let NYC take that! And thanks for your playfulness in front of the camera, made for some magnetic images!

Aloha,

Ajja

A real local dance girl, Rachel, was back after graduating from UC Irvine’s renowned dance program, rejuvenating and prepping for her moving to NYC. Only after returning from a sweet summer program with Batsheva Dance Company, an incredible Israeli company. If you have the time watch one of my all time favorite pieces called Minus 16. They bring up members of the audience on to the stage, it is just brilliant. Like Rachel.

God,

Thank you for putting pink in sunsets. Like this one. This one made me pull over and make me look like a real tourist, but I knew it was like your cherry on top of a great afternoon surfing.

307 Cartwheels

September 12, 2011

Valley Isle Gymnastics (VIG) is one of my other homes. You know, I have my  home behind the camera, another one behind my happy laptop. Just a few places I spend lots of my time.  VIG hosts an annual cartwheel festival to benefit Special Olympics on Maui and it was a privilege to take some photos of this very fun, yet dizzying event. I thought I would share some of these because who doesn’t love a cartwheel?

The gymnasts try to do as many cartwheels as they can in 20 minutes and the Special Olympics athletes do as many jumps as they can on the trampoline. They are sponsored financially according to the number.

J & R

September 6, 2011

Dear Jenny & Romnick,

I admire your young love. It appears steadfast in a wholehearted kind of way. Based on friendship, a deep acceptance of one another, a grand desire to glorify God and especially good fun!

I left your wedding in awe of the deep support and respect your family and friends have for you. I think that is evidence enough you will last………many…….long……years.

With lots of aloha,

Ajja

Photographing weddings of people that are dear to me is a treasure. This wedding in particular had many layers to it for me and for everyone involved.  The day started with rain all morning which made for some anxious #holdtherainwedon’thavearainplan prayers. And those prayers were heard for all the rain did was make for a cool and pleasantly overcast afternoon in Iao Valley at the Portuguese Garden. Minutes before the ceremony you could sense the deep emotion in Jenny’s dad as he prepared to give away his youngest daughter. The up close moments I have to witness the well of feeling a dad can have in those moments is why I adore my job. But Kaleo took that task of giving away his daughter to another level and also chose to marry her. Beautiful. The Wai’au side of the family feels deeply, you can see in throughout the pictures of Jenny. Enjoy.

J & R…they made these decorations for the site. Yup. After this…they destroyed them with joy!

 jen & romnick-27

This next one I adore on a few levels.  One,  it shows the backdrop that is Iao Valley. Two, I have always wanted to shoot in a Kalo field and three, there is also a beautiful moody tone to the weather and their looks I adore.

J & R….well they also made these too, all the centerpieces at the reception.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist throwing in that picture of the dessert table. Oh my, Filipinos do dessert right! Oh and I think they fed the five thousand that night. So ono.

Firsts.

August 15, 2011

I love firsts. I love doing things I have never done before. I love the intrigue and adventure of not knowing exactly what is around the corner. The excitement of firsts is why I love to travel, so many opportunities to do things I have never done before.

Last weekend was a first for me. I traveled to Lanai. It is only a 45 minute ferry ride away and yet after growing up here I had never been. Thankfully I traveled with the Tano’s of Joanna Tano Photography to second shoot with her at the Four Seasons Koele Lodge.

You won’t see any pictures of the view from the boat as I tend to get a bit woozy if I don’t keep my eyes on the horizon. But you will see many from the fabulous Koele Lodge. I could have wondered those grounds and lounged in the lobby for hours on end. I could see why the couple who got married that Saturday just adored that place enough to bring their friends and family back there to get hitched.

Just look at this lobby.

This is the view of  an entire green house full of….orchids. Oh and the place smelled heavenly in there!

Can you see the gazebo/temple nestled to the left? That is where the ceremony was. Dreamy.

 Lanai-18

And there was koi, lots of koi! I found out just how long I could spend photographing them. They are just like dancers, making all sorts of choreographic moments in the water for me.

 Lanai-9

Long winding paths, just beckoning you to forget about your responsibilities in life!

To the right and left of this fountain were outdoor fire pits!

 Lanai-21

 Lanai-22

The pace is so elegantly slow here. What else is there to do but play croquet?!

Oh yeah and look at those pine trees lining the hill top. Cool.

 Lanai-23

I had caught of few of Joanna and her lovely family  enjoying the pool before I hopped back on the ferry home. They stayed the night at the Manele Bay Four Seasons to get some r and r.

I felt like a happy little tourist running around with my camera before for the last few minutes before catching the last and very bumpy ferry back to Maui.

This is my farewell picture of Lanai, but I really think of it as saying ‘E Komo Mai’ or welcome…..you are welcome back!

Hiroki is currently studying dance at NYU but grew up finding the basics here on Maui. We were all pretty proud of him as he made it to Vegas week on SYTYCD. And if you know what that acronym means I know you are a fan. I love this next shot, something very  ’boy next door’ about it.

I couldn’t wait to do this shoot, I knew he would kill it in every way. I love his adventurous and passion spirit towards dance, it is so fun to be around. I could have shot till dawn.

If you are Hiroki fan, I took plenty  more.

Rooted.

August 4, 2011

I don’t know what it is, but I have a passion for local weddings.  I adore that I live in a place that draws some of the most discerning couples. By choosing Maui they get one of the most magical places in the world. They are the ones that will drink in every detail of this island and their days here. But there is a special place in my heart for those who grew up here, who are rooted in this culture and will live and breath this island life. And that is Tiana & Joey.
